Free Wifi Coming to Downtown Raleigh NC Fall 2009
This is a smart thing for a city to do when they already own local fiber & state government already has the big data pipes nearby. A minimal outlay will lead to people spending more time in the city core thereby patronizing more core businesses.

I could see smaller towns using a mesh to cover main street leading traffic back to a pre-existing internet hookup like at a city building.
